تُعد كنيسة القديسة ماريا من أبرز المعالم التاريخية في مدينة عدن، حيث تم تشييدها عام 1871م ككنيسة إنجيلية بروتستانتية خلال فترة الاستعمار البريطاني للمدينة، وقد احتلت الكنيسة مكانة دينية بارزة، قبل أن تتحول لاحقًا إلى معلم سياسي فريد.
في عام 1947م، تحوّلت الكنيسة إلى مقر للمجلس التشريعي لمستعمرة عدن، وهو أول مجلس نواب من نوعه في شبه الجزيرة العربية، ضمّ المجلس ثمانية أعضاء، يمثل كل منهم إحدى طوائف المدينة، حيث كانت كل طائفة تختار ممثلها بشكل مستقل، وقد استمر المجلس في أداء مهامه حتى عام 1966م، ليشكّل بذلك تجربة رائدة في الحياة البرلمانية بالمنطقة.
