تقع جزيرة العمال، إحدى جزر العاصمة عدن، كحكايةٍ بحريةٍ عالقةٍ في ضمير المكان، وتُعدّ إدارياً جزءاً من مديرية خور مكسر. يقطنها اليوم نحو 490 نسمة، وتُطلّ على ميناء عدن كجوهرة صغيرة تختزل عبق التاريخ وملامح الحياة.
عرفت الجزيرة قديماً باسم جزيرة السَّواعي، نسبةً إلى صناعة السفن الشراعية الصغيرة (السواعي) التي كانت تزدهر فيها، كما ورد في خريطة بريطانية تعود لعام 1836م. وعند احتلال عدن أطلق عليها الإنجليز اسم جزيرة العبيد، لما كانت تشهده من استغلال واستعباد للعمال، غير أن هذا الاسم تبدّل بعد الاستقلال الوطني ليُطلق عليها اسم جزيرة العمال، تخليداً لكفاح الإنسان العامل وكرامته.

تتموضع الجزيرة قُبالة ميناء عدن، وتُعد من الجزر المتصلة بتاريخ المدينة البحري والاجتماعي، وتتبع إدارياً مديرية خور مكسر.

Al-Ommal Island: A Memory of the Sea and a Vessel of History in the Heart of Aden
Al-Ommal Island, one of the islands of the Yemeni capital, Aden, stands as a maritime tale etched into the soul of the place. Administratively, it is part of Khormaksar District, and today around 490 residents inhabit the island. Overlooking the Port of Aden, it gleams like a small jewel encapsulating the essence of history and life.
Historically, the island was known as Sawā‘i Island, named after the craft of building sawā‘i—small traditional sailing boats—that once flourished there, as noted on a British map from 1836. When the British occupied Aden, they renamed it Slave Island in reference to the exploitation and enslavement of laborers. After the country’s independence, the name was changed to Al-Ommal Island, in honor of workers’ dignity and struggle.
